FINALLY Saturday, September 29, 2007

Leave it to a storm named Melissa to procrastinate until near the end of the season to show up.  But, FINALLY, she’s here!  It was tropical depression #14 but, now….it’s TROPICAL STORM MELISSA.  Yeah, I am so excited.  To read what’s up from the National Hurricane Center, click here.  To go to weather.com, the weather channel’s site, click the picture.  I don’t think the storm will do anything but, it could always surprise us.

TD 14 Projected Path

Yeah, okay, it DID fizzle out rather fast but, at least there was one.  And, so it is that the name Melissa will be used again until they retire the name OR it becomes a deadly hurricane and kills tons of people.  So, I guess we will be on the look-out for it in a couple years. They rotate the names every year.  So, next year, “m” will be a male name.  Oh well.

Cook/Peterson Camping Trip Thursday, September 27, 2007

So, this was the fourth year we have met up with the Peterson’s and gone camping.  We have gone to Garner State Park every year except last year.  Last year we went to the Guadalupe State Park.  It was a nice park but, there is just something about Garner that makes you want to go back.  It is always great to set time aside to relax with great friends and family.  Here is just a few pictures from our trip.  I filled up my flickr account with photos so, you can see more there. (Just click here to go to flickr.)  For some reason, I didn’t get a lot of pictures of Frank (sorry Frank).  I did get some great pictures of a gorgeously pregnant Cristen, though.  We had a very relaxing and wonderful time.  I hope everyone who was not there understands how jealous of us they should be.

You can go on a short little hike (that at times feels like miles) called the Crystal Cave trail.  At the top of the trail is a cave called Crystal Cave.  Before when we went, there was one bat and lots of crystals on the walls.  This year, there were not as many crystals but, there were quite a few bats.  Someone (Allen) had the bright idea (Allen) to just randomly snap pictures in the cave. (ALLEN)  The flash startled the bats which would then begin to fly around the cave. (ALLEN)  It enabled Allen to get a couple good pictures of bats flying.  I want you to also notice how close our heads are to the ceiling.  It was a little creepy but, it was still totally awesome to see bats.

Well, the hummingbirds are back.  Yesterday, when I arrived home from work, there was a swarm all over my two feeders.  So, I moved the two feeders further apart.  I counted about twelve but, they move so fast you don’t know if you counted the same one twice or if another one flew in and you forgot to count it.  There are people who’s job it is to count birds.  I love watching the birds but, I don’t think I could count them.  I start then, they all start to blend in to their surroundings with their natural camouflage.  Allen and Zane were standing next to one of the feeders real still so the birds would come up within inches of them.  No, I didn’t get a picture of that but, I will try to real soon.  In fact, I didn’t take any pictures at all yesterday.  I was slacking.  I did take some pictures the first day and those are the ones I am putting up here.

This was as close-up as my camera (and the hummingbird) would allow me to get.  I thought it was cool after I took the picture that the little guy was watching me as I was watching him.

Yes, I caught this picture of the hummingbird flying with my camera.  I was really surprised.  (So THAT’S what those “special” settings are for!)

Here is the little guy waiting to attack the next hummingbird daring enough to come near HIS feeder.  They are such brutal little things.   By the next evening, there were about four that formed some kind of hummingbird gang and were sharing the feeder but chasing everyone else off.  Occasionally, more would be there but, it was mainly those four.  I will call them the Hummingbird Mafia.  Hmm…Somehow, that doesn’t sound like something to be worried about…UNLESS YOU’RE A HUMMINGBIRD.  Bum bum BUM.

So, my camera’s memory card is full.  It seems like there is a ton of stuff I could put on here but, I just don’t have a picture of anything.  How frustrating.  Oh, I know, my sister, Michelle doesn’t want me to put any pictures of her, Ram, or my niece, Danielle up here but, I have news about them.  So, this would be a great time to let everyone know.  Michelle and Ram have set a wedding date. [gasp]  Yeah, I know what you are thinking.  I was thinking the same thing.  It’s red…the color for her bridesmaids’ dresses.  And, of course I volunteered to be one.  Duh, why wait for her to ask me?  Oh, right, the date.  It is going to be September 14, 2008.  That is a Sunday.  Of course I am SO excited for her.  I keep giving her unasked for advice, as any older, married sister should do in this situation.  So far, they know they are going to get married at a Catholic church in Gregory, TX.  Ram’s father contributed to some of the features in the church.  I am not sure what, though.  I know they are also planning on having a mariachi band at the reception.  I LOVE wedding receptions with mariachi bands.  I don’t remember now why Allen and I didn’t have one at our wedding…  Hmm, I’ll have to think on that one.  Anyway, so, any money-saving ideas? Let her know.
